Section 144(18) of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act pertains to the rules of the road, specifically regarding traffic signals. This section states that:
"Every driver approaching a traffic control signal showing a circular red indication and facing the indication shall stop his or her vehicle at a clearly marked stop line or, if none, then immediately before entering the nearest crosswalk or, if none, then immediately before entering the intersection, and shall not proceed until a signal to proceed is shown or the movement may lawfully be made."
This means that when a driver approaches a red light, they must come to a complete stop at the designated stopping point and wait until the light turns green or another legal movement is allowed (such as making a right turn on red, where permitted).
The intent of this provision is to ensure the safe and orderly movement of traffic at intersections controlled by traffic lights. Violation of this section can result in fines and demerit points on the driver's record in Ontario.
